Clean up of the Bridge area

Posted by Roni Browne Katz on September 22, 2009 at 1:49 PM

Although members of our group have embraced the preservation and clean up of the bridge area, it is apparent that there is daily littering of the site and no efforts by Janssen to maintain it. Why then, is their sign there?

This, a group cleanup of the area, would make a great photo op and keep the issue in the papers. We should also try to get the historical plaque restored to that monument rock on the south side. That would keep us in the historical establishments eyes, while they mull the historical significance of our own "Jacobs Creek Crossing".

I have spoken with the Regent of the Mercer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (they originally donated and erected the plaque in 1929)
They will address the replacement of the plaque at their Oct.3rd meeting.

Two of us spent about an hour on Sunday cleaning up trash around the bridge. By Sunday afternoon when we drove by, there was fresh litter! So, this is a community problem we need to tackle. It would be great to have a monthly community clean up day/time.

Hey Roni - When you spoke to the DAR Regent, was she already aware of the situation ? I'm asking because I contacted them last week and I wondered if the information was shared within the organization.

Yes Diane...in fact, because of your email, she actually came down to see the
site herself on Saturday. I am preparing a summary for her with images that she will present at the Oct.3rd D.A.R. meeting.

Which DAR did it go to? Princeton
http://www.princetondar.org/
You can drop them a note on the Bridge on the Home page.
Or
The Mercer Trenton one?

Anyone? Buhler? Anyone?.....

I contacted the General Mercer Chapter of the DAR since they erected the bronze plaques and they have gotten involved in the current issues. I also wrote to the NJ State DAR but haven't heard anything from them as of yet. I will send something to the Princeton Chapter as well.

Thank you for doing this. I went to do same on Monday and was so pleasantly surprised to see virtually no trash. I was then able to move on to picking up trash on the Jacobs Creek Road Side.

I wrote the DAR Trenton last night and received this reply:

Thank you for the update. I have numerous news articles shared recently
on this matter. We are VERY interaested in this issue, and ask that you
send future emails to me at home because personal emails are frowned
upon at my workplace. My home email is albandjudy@verizon.net. Thank
you, and I'll keep in touch.

End

This is the letter I sent, on my own behalf,

Ms King,
First I would like to thank the DAR for their show of interest in restoring the Jacobs Creek Crossing site plaque. I was amuse to see that the DAR had originally installed a plaque at this nationally critical historic site in 1929, and so it's replacement would be sort of a anniversary for your chapter. You would be carrying on the work of your sisters from 80 years ago., while significantly contributing to preserving this presently endangered historical site.

As you know, the historical significance of this site is the deciding factor in a major, federal grade standard bridge being built over this site. (Are you sitting down?) A six million dollar multi-lane monster. Any assistance your organization could lend to defending the calm and charming nature of this site would be greatly appreciated. Even a temporary plaque would go a long way to the reverence this site deserves, while helping your fellow citizens by helping us to get a sweet safer bridge at 1/5 that price.

Anyway, think about it. We would greatly appreciate your concern and gracious attention to this issue.

End

I suggest you send your concerns via email to the above address.
